A Healing Environment

I have heard people say that real healing after a stay in the hospital starts when they come home … The familiar surroundings and presence of loved ones are nurturing, and continue to work where the medications left off. Regaining energy and joy require a healing environment.
Many of our fellow seniors are alone. They might be too tired to buy groceries, too lonely to want to resume their activities. Most people do not know what resources are available, and how to access them.
As the physicians, nurses, scientists and dedicated lay people making up our Medical Group, we feel that providing excellent healthcare to our members goes beyond employing great doctors. It extends to creating a healing environment for our members…
We have just launched our Senior Outreach Project. In this new effort, Senior Advocates extend a hand to fellow seniors just discharged from the hospital by calling them, ensuring they are well, and providing them with information on transportation, Meals on Wheels and more. Ideas such as these don’t arise in a vacuum. The Torrance Hospital IPA Medical Group leadership regularly meets with seniors from the community to hear their experiences and suggestions to improve healthcare.
Most seniors don’t fully understand what resources their medical group offers them. Our new webpage and the Senior Newsletter serve to inform and explain.
More and more seniors are getting actively involved in their healthcare by being very informed about their disease. The more you know, the better you can help your physician and nurse to get you well! Our webpage contains an entire section devoted to explaining many illnesses. Interactive learning about health conditions occurs at our regularly scheduled Forever Young events, where expert speakers explain common conditions found in the elderly.
We want to extend a healing environment that is so important to getting well and staying well to our members. We can achieve this by reaching out, listening and sharing information.
